Tongue-Tied (The Wicca Man) ReviewReally, Amazon has to find a way to make buyers aware of a novel's length: at 6,89$ (as of July 25th, 2011) a work this length (a four-hour read? Maybe not even that?) and this old (pubblished in 2007) comes close to my idea of theft (or con, at least).
The work itself is far from bad. I imagine it was to be the first instalment of a series because the ending leaves a lot of openings for further development and the title itself can be read that way, but after four years I must suppose the author gave up on this effort. Pity, as it had many things to recommend itself.
Who would not love Sean, the main character? About forty, rather plain looking, intelligent but not always smart, he is an underpaid college teacher, an ordinary person everybody can identify with. He is a practitioner of the occult but this power does not give him self assurance, quite the contrary, and his people skills leave much to be desired. Who would not be happy for him when the hunky vampire guy falls for him? Who would not cheer when, in the course of the novel and sometimes against his will, he is pushed and forced to grow up as a person, to stop living in his own secluded world to become his own man?
In Ms Veinglory's world vampires are quite different, totally detached from the usual folklore. Their true nature is an essential part of the plot and I cannot tell more without giving too much away, but rest assured they are new and interesting.
The writing is proficient, subdued in keeping adjectives and emotions on the low. The plot is interesting, if short and the only, but huge, moment I need to complain about is the ending. It is not only short -always a mistake: a reader must be able to say goodbye to the characters- but sports an hilarious moment: Sean and his hunky vampire boy are going to have their brain melting sex when the vampire opens a condom with a flourish and makes great show of wearing it.
Excuse me? What was that? An undead wearing a condom?
Now, I understand that every responsible M/M romance author is supposed to include safe sex in his/her plot, I truly do. But I also feel that supernatural characters should be exempted. Or at least, in the case of a human having sex with one of them, the author could put the request for safe sex in the mouth of the human himself.
No, my dears, it happens as I mentioned before. A huge, gut-wrenching laugh entirely destroyed the already faulty ending for me... Oh my, oh my...Tongue-Tied (The Wicca Man) OverviewGenre: LGBT Vampire ParanormalWhen Sean, a conservative psychology professor, is cornered one night by a very buff creature of the night, he does the first thing he can think of. Casts a spell. Not just any spell. A love spell. And it works. Now the vampire, Thane, is head over heels for Sean and causing chaos in his life. Even worse, Sean's falling in love with him, too. But is it real or just the magic? The witches are pissed Sean used coercive black magic. The vampires want Thane back. And Sean knows, if you love something, you've got to set it free. If it comes back, it's meant to be, right? The only problem is, the being he's setting free is a bloodthirsty vampire, and there's a lot more at stake than just matters of the heart.Publisher's note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: m/m sexual practices.
