Dr. Chi's Method of Fingernail and Tongue Diagnosis ReviewI am a student of Chinese medicine, first year, and looked forward to this book, which was highly recommended. It is very didactic and gives many examples of different shapes and qualities of the fingernails, their basic meanings, and supports it with claims of fastidious research. However, it does not give any physilogical explanation of HOW the nail reacts to changes in the body, for instance, heat in the Large Intestine results in the middle finger developing white spots at the tips that expand according to the severity of the condition, but it does not explain why the nails reflect the different body states. One of the problems with the book is that it does not talk much about theory, only gives different examples of clinical experience, which was then interpreted to mean different things from the thousands of cases cited. The tongue section is equally helpful, and more detailed than the fingernail section.
Advantage? Do you know of another book that breaks down the fingernails like this one? I don't either. Any tool that we have for diagnosis without the use of machinery is precious. Thanks Doctor Chi for sharing all of your case studies. He also talks in the book about a "Wheel" that makes diagnosis easier. Be sure to ask that this wheel be included with the book. it is supposed to accompany the text.
