Review and Pretest for NCCAOM and California Exams in Chinese Herbology ReviewI bought this book because I needed to review herbs and formulas for the national and California state acupuncture boards. I purchased this one because it was the most recent (2010) and since it wasn't just questions and had a review. I would not recommend this book for several reasons:
1) If you're studying for the boards, then it's important to not over flood yourself with too much information. About 30% of the formulas listed aren't on the formulas list for the NCCAOM test. If you're only studying for the California boards, than there is much more formulas that you don't need to bother with. Although there is no official list of herbs for the national exam, I would expect that there are also too many herbs to know in this book.
2) Despite having too many formulas and herbs, this book does not include several of the national board formulas and 1 California state board formula! The required formula list is common knowledge and not having any of these, especially if you're claiming to be a review book for the boards is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
3) Numerous spelling errors, which may not be uncommon with Chinese text books, but sometimes the error made equates to wrong info (for example, LV vs LU would be liver vs lung). Sometimes the spelling errors occur in the index, so you are not able to find the herb you're looking for unless you know what the mis-spelling is. Who ever reviewed or edited this book should have done a better job and have used spell check!
Despite all of this, there are many questions to test yourself with, although some of the answers are for herbs or formulas you don't need to know for the exams. This is the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1.
