Grose's Classical Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue: Revised And Corrected With The Addition Of Numerous Slang Phrases Collected From Tried Authorities ReviewI bought this, and at least my copy is readable and acceptable in that regard. It includes many many words - 200 pages worth, but no index. The problem is that what you really need is a contemporary English map to the words in this book; a reverse, if you will, of the way this Dictionary is organized. For example, if you wanted to know a 'vulgar' term for 'drunk' you'd have to search all 200 pages extracting all the relevant terms. If you already know the vulgar term that you are looking for, then this book is fine on giving examples of its use, and its proper 'slang' meaning. It's just that most writers are not going to use it that way. I know of no Contemporary English --> 18th century English dictionary. But a really good resource is Slang Through the Ages - which has about 35 classes of contemporary English words and their older forms. And a detailed index. There's a 2002 version of Samuel Johnson's Dictionary that is an excellent resource. You have better luck with this one of finding a contemporary term described in an older form of English. Also 'Wordcraft' is an essential resource for Contemporary English 14th century English (Early MIddle English and older) (it goes in both directions). Good Luck!Grose's Classical Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue: Revised And Corrected With The Addition Of Numerous Slang Phrases Collected From Tried Authorities OverviewThis is a reproduction of a book published before 1923.
