As Author's Assistant/Editor for GOD'S BRAT, I can offer a special insight into the content of this book; but first, let me "paint you a word-picture."
Sr. Kathryn, aka Sr. M. Bartholomew, lives at Marian Residence, the nursing home for retired Sisters of St. Francis. She is eighty-eight years old, is confined to a wheelchair, has considerable hearing loss. I knew Sister only by sight when a friend asked me to volunteer to type twenty-five pages of Sister's autobiography so she could have it copied and distributed among family members. For me, that would be no difficult task. Yes, I'll meet with her about it. At our first meeting, communication soon loomed as a challenge for both of us. Sister talked. I learned to write to be sure she accurately understood my replies. As we became acquainted, we developed a routine which worked well. It wasn't long until Sister asked if I could 'type this'. And then "Can you type this, too?" As she pulled additional pages from bulging files, I eventually asked, "What all do you have there?" And then, "It looks like you have a book in those files." Little did I know how those words would forever change the lives of both of us!!!
After taking a writing class some thirty-five or so years ago, Sr. Kathryn, aka Sr. M. Bartholomew, became a prolific writer. (Her BA and MA degrees in education also served her well in becoming an author.) She wrote and wrote -- poetry, prayers, tongue twisters, stories, columns for church bulletins -- mostly about life....life's encounters, experiences, people, places, things; faith, observations, thoughts, feelings and more. She wrote about certain topics many times, each time a tad different version, each time adding a new perspective. Pulling multiple versions of each topic into one composite story was like polishing a gem or putting together a jig-saw puzzle....challenging, frustrating at times, great satisfaction once completed!!
Sister's writings are all 'written from the heart' in a conversational, easy read style for your inspiration and enjoyment. Many tell of by-gone days which are nostalgic times now, but were hard times when they were being lived. The first sixteen years of her life story are written in the form of vignettes of those years...a non-traditional form. 'Our Rural School' is one must-read story which vividly describes what country school was like when she was young. DO TAKE TIME TO SAVOR HER WRITINGS and the forty-some pictures which accompany them.
