It's focus is on "disciplined" music, and can give you a good baseline for moving into improv. Many clinic and all-state tryout pieces came out of this book tried by time. It would take years to master its total contents. I was playing "new" pieces out of it last night! It will also help keep you from buying dozens of etude books. The book is very methodical with each section introduced in several languages. There is no player who won't be challenged by it's content. It supplied just what I was looking for. The CD was a bonus.Mel Bay Complete Classic Chicago Blues Harp OverviewThis book is meant to take an instrument and musical style and teach it to the people who made it so popular, the blues listening public. A comprehensive lesson and study book for the intermediate and advanced diatonic harmonica player, Classic Chicago Blues Harp presents techniques, progressive examples and accompanying twelve bar blues exercise and examples. Special attention is given to the accurate reading of blues rhythms and each notated tune is carefully marked with tablature indicating precisely where to find individual notes. Each chapter concludes with a chapter review of what was taught in that section. This book is best suited to the intermediate player rather than the beginner, and will appeal strongly to those with a genuine desire to learn the Chicago blues harmonica style. The book is excellent for self-teaching, yet is comprehensive enough to be used in a private instruction format. The included CD recording insures accuracy of interpretation and ease in learning. Most of the exercises and examples are included on the CD with split-tracked back-up music. Each song is played once with harmonica and then without. A great all-around study book for blues harmonica players at any level.

Mel Bay presents Basic Blues Chromatic for the Diatonic Player: Level 3, Complete Blues Harmonica Lesson Series ReviewThe book and cd are a bridge between third position diatonic playing and being comfortable on the chromatic. It is most useful if you play diatonic harmonica and your music theory approach has you competent in 'third-position' playing. The cd is a good tool for jamming on the exercises.
It is how a blues player would pick up a chromatic and use it to play blues songs.
Its method has you using different keys of chromatic for different keys of songs.
I was hoping for a method that would help me be articulate in many keys using one chromatic harmonica.
The notation was different than other training methods I've used.
It felt backward ("3" = hole three draw, "3+" = hole three blow).
The book mostly focused on tongue block techniques (such as slaps and octaves) and verse patterns.
These is valuable, but i expected something that would get me more familiar with the layout (and relationship) of notes on the chromatic and adjusting to the use of the slide button. Unfortunately, almost half the book is dedicated to practicing these skills on a diatonic.
It's a good book, but my expectations were off. I should go with a more basic, chromatic for beginners method, even if i have to wade through soem repetitive stuff in the beginning.
For your expectations: buy this book and cd setup if you play mostly diatonic but want to work in your one chromatic harmonica into your set.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for some more beginner-ish training. It'd probably help me appreciate this book more.

One of the instructors on you tube recommended Dave's website and he had all of his books online to review. He even has short audio files to listen to before you make a decision to buy. I recommend all of his books. It is like having a music instructor. If you wants to know all of the ins and outs of reading music, learning rhythm, and all of the playing techniques these books are for you. Keep in mind that Dave has 3 levels, so you will need to buy all of his series to progress. A Singer's Manual of Spanish Lyric Diction ReviewI have found this manual to be quite good, which is convenient since there is practically nothing else out there for Spanish singing that I know of. Castel's book provides quick-reference as well as detailed guides to pronouncing Spanish, and he gives good coverage of Spanish variants that one may come across. The repertoire suggestions are handy as well. About the only thing I can think of to improve the edition would be a CD with audio samples of the various sounds, since there are some that are indigenous to Castilian Spanish. This of course would drive up the price, but I think it'd be worth it since most people purchasing this book *genuinely* want to sing well in Spanish.A Singer's Manual of Spanish Lyric Diction Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to Playing the Harmonica ReviewIf you tried Jon Gindick's harmonica technique (he wrote a simple method and bundled it with an inexpensive harmonica in the Klutz books series) you might find you are interested in learning more. There are a lot of books on harmonica method, and they range from too simple to too complicated.
This book is surprisingly good. It covers what harmonicas to purchase (and the advice is good, the listing of brands fairly complete.) There is a section on bending notes, an essential technique for getting more notes out of a diatonic harmonica and for creating a bluesy sound.
The best chapter, for me, was on the structure of 12-bar blues with an explanation of the "call-and-response" structure. It's easy to understand and essential for structuring your blues riffs to make musical sense. There's also a fine chapter on the etiquette of jamming with harmonica when you join up with a guitarist, singer and other instrumentalists. The harmonica plays support, mostly, but does get to solo. When should you chime in and when do you fade to the background? This chapter tells you how not to make a fool of yourself.
The only thing this book doesn't have is a CD with guitar or piano for jamming along with. If you are getting started in harmonica, especially blues harp, you will need some CD's, especially of the greats like Little Walter and Charles Musselwhite, to provide examples. You can't listen enough to get the ideas down. But this book is a really worthy text to go along with your practice.The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to Playing the Harmonica OverviewThe Complete Idiot's GuideA (R) to Playing the Harmonica will be the ultimate learning text for the aspiring "harpist" (as harmonica players are called). The book will emphasize blues, rock, bluegrass, folk, and jazz; it is designed to appeal to the broadest possible cross section of players. Additional chapters will cover purchasing the best harmonica for you, harmonica maintenance, the art of playing with other musicians, and profiles of master harpists.

The Art of Trombone Playing ReviewIt is not by accident that Mr. Edwin Kleinhammer's name appears on many, many symphony musicians' bios. There are plenty of outstanding players, but "teaching" world class artists is another thing. CSO artists Mr. Kleinhammer and the late Mr. Arnold Jacobs and the late Mr. Frank Crisafulli have trained innumerable (global) lower brass artists for well over thirty years each. I have had the pleasure of receiving a group lesson from Mr. Kleinhammer with two others and individual instruction from the late gentleman's gentleman Mr. Frank Crisafulli. What about the book? Mr. Kleinhammer states in his book that he strongly encourages lessons, but at the "worst" the book can self-teach the reader...this is NOT an exaggeration. His highly detailed diagrammed/photo-filled pages on embouchure alone can not be replicated in any other text, they are worth the price of the book by themselves. The (paperback) text includes HIGHLY practical sections on breathing, tone, range, slide technique/legatto (when to use "loo" vs. "doo", etc), intonation control, daily exercises and the cruicial tongue-ing and concurrent air flow (emphasize the "air" get the flappy thing out of the way) mistakes of even advanced amateur players. If you "see" the pros calmy whip through a passage of a rapid Rimsky-Korsakov, for example, without jerking the slide or doing face contortions, etc. you're seeing all of Mr. Kleinhammer's book suggestions put into motion..this level of 1st flight pro does "make it" look easy. Go see a Joe Alessi, an outstanding jazz trombonist as well as the NY Phily first chair, and you'll see what I mean.
The book contains also contains a concise section on trombone prep. literature including Clarke, Arban, Blazhevich, Carl Fischer, Rochut (Melodious Etudes Book III--a masterpiece of symph. prep.in my opinion), and all the significant classic solos and ensemble pieces.
Again, Mr. Kleinhammer correctly mentions throughout the book that the student needs models to listen to, pattern after..simply put he's talking about "recordings" (not necessarily concert halls as you will not be able to sufficiently pick out the passage)Get the Ralph Sauer (Audition excerpt)or Christian Lindberg CDs and listen, and listen some more.. The student who gets on this early in the game combined with this book and a decent brass teacher will be far ahead of the game.
Another suggestion is to tune into the current Boston Symphony bass trombonist's website, Doug Yeo, he provides some fabulous suggestions and advice. (Mr. George Krem, Mr. Yeo's first college played with me in Wheaton, IL. He has served as the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Winnepeg & Victoria Canada and now Cedar Rapids, IA principal. He also has a CD out, taught at the U of Iowa for 12 years after being taught himself by Mr. Keith Brown a legendary Phily Orch. trombonist. Mr. Krem is a very fine teacher and artist). This book, with some good CDs to model after and a decent brass teacher (doesn't have to be "lower" brass teacher frankly) will provide some distinct advantages in accelerating your progress. ...The Art of Trombone Playing OverviewEdward Kleinhammer, author of The Art of Trombone Playing, joined the Civic Orchestra, the training orchestra for the Chicago Symphony, in 1940. After two years he was accepted by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for his entire career until he retired in 1985. He has played under every Chicago Symphony Orchestra conductor, covering from Frederick Stock to Sir Georg Solti. In 1986 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the International Trombone Association. While Kleinhammer states that his book "is written for the student who has no teacher available or for the teacher seeking more fundamental knowledge of the field of trombone playing," he emphasizes that it is also "for the trombonist (in any stage of proficiency) who is always a student."

Not only does it answer a myriad questions I had as a beginner, but it gives detailed advice on infrequently documented procedures. For example, there are chapters on the mouthpiece, reed, clarinet, embouchure, relaxation, breathing and support, voicing the tone, tonguiing, fingers, tone quality, intonation, high-register playing, technique, resistance, rhythm, legato, and phrasing. I haven't found any other book that covers half of the subjects. Much less with the lucidity and detail of Mr. Stein. I highly recommend this book.The Art of Clarinet Playing OverviewKeith Stein was already a phenomenal clarinetist when he attended the very first session of the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. Stein was then accepted into the Chicago Symphony, and became one of its youngest members. He earned a master of music degree at the University of Michigan, and his teaching career began at Michigan State University and Interlochen, where he remained for the next 41 years until he retired. Within this book, the author makes the player aware of all the many faulty habits he may have acquired, then offers constructive suggestions for remedying each one.
