A Singer's Manual of Spanish Lyric Diction ReviewI have found this manual to be quite good, which is convenient since there is practically nothing else out there for Spanish singing that I know of. Castel's book provides quick-reference as well as detailed guides to pronouncing Spanish, and he gives good coverage of Spanish variants that one may come across. The repertoire suggestions are handy as well. About the only thing I can think of to improve the edition would be a CD with audio samples of the various sounds, since there are some that are indigenous to Castilian Spanish. This of course would drive up the price, but I think it'd be worth it since most people purchasing this book *genuinely* want to sing well in Spanish.A Singer's Manual of Spanish Lyric Diction Overview

It has descriptions on how to make sounds, differences in diphthongs in English and German, and explanations on German intonation and stress. There are also descriptions of dialectal variations in German (and some in English). (It is also heavy on the IPA but makes it easy to understand.) I have found this book to be very helpful throughout my whole college career. It is now four years after I bought the book and I still refer to it at least once a semester. Highly recommended!Modern German Pronunciation: An Introduction for Speakers of English OverviewThis revised and updated edition of Modern German Pronunciation offers the most complete guide to the correct pronunciation of German for native speakers of English. It begins with an introduction to the problems of pronunciation and the basic concepts of phonetics. The following chapters take each aspect of pronunciation in turn: consonants, vowels, stress and intonation, and the conversational pronunciation of German with its many reduced or "weak" forms. But when I opened it, I was astonished. It's full of practical exercises that will enable you to familiarise yourself with your speech organs and will teach you to pronounce all the major sounds of the World's languages.
Throughout, Catford refers to major dialects of English, so it should be equally useful whether you're English, Scottish or American.
However, if English is a foreign language to you (as it is to me), some of the exercises may be a little more difficult than they were meant to be, but that's the only flaw I could find in this fine book.

This textbook is the fourth edition of the revision and expansion of A Manual for Articulatory Phonetics, compiled by Rick Floyd in 1986. It includes many other people's materials from articulatory phonetics courses as taught for over sixty years in the training schools of SIL International. It also includes much information from sources outside of SIL.

It is written in an informal, personal style and is a practical book for teachers and students alike. Most chapters begin with a statement of goals and conclude with a list of key concepts and exercises. Examples, tables, and explanatory figures are distributed liberally throughout.

This book is oriented primarily towards native speakers of American English, particularly with reference to examples used to guide pronunciation of new sounds. However, most of the information included should be profitable to students regardless of their native language.

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is used for the phonetic transcription, but the equivalent Americanist symbols are also given in order to equip the student to use other linguists' materials, regardless of which system they use to transcribe their data.

You are living and working in the United States, or perhaps you are living and working in your home country using English on a daily basis for business. You have basic English language fluency. I admire you because it has been a dream of mine to be able to speak another language-any language-as well as you speak English. But darn it! Don't you get a little tired of those funny looks? Doesn't it get annoying to hear, "Could you repeat that please?" The purpose of this workbook and accompanying CDs, is to help you realize why you get those occasional reactions from your listeners, and to take the good English you already have and polish it enough to keep those questions to a bare minimum. And while we're at it, I'd like for you to have some fun!
