Gifts And Ministries Of The Holy Spirit ReviewThis book is a good primer on the Holy Spirit and the gifts. I don't believe that the author intended to be deep, but I believe that he wanted to pen a book that was assessible to most readers. There are those who would argue that the author assumes a Pentecostal stance, but he does have the right to write about the gifts based on his experience as long as he doesn't violate Scripture. He does not. He speaks about the gifts of the Spirit operating in his own life and also relates the gifts to what is reflected in the lives of biblical characters. Once again, this book is not meant to be a deep theological tome. They do exist. For those readers seeking greater depth and scholarship, I would suggest looking at The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts: In the New Testatment Chuch and Today by Max Turner. Other authors to consider are Gorodn D. Fee, Richard Hays, and Craig Blomberg.Gifts And Ministries Of The Holy Spirit OverviewThe gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit function with greatest accuracy through people who understand them. This book defines the gifts and reveals their operations in the body of Christ today. Discover how you can operate in these gifts and be included in the great outpouring of Gods Spirit.

His house was close to a forest, and the forest was called Indian Deep. One day Cass went into the forest, and he heard strange sounds. He saw a boat's emergency lights on. What could he do with his dog in the middle of a blizzard, and he was the only one around to help the survivors? This book was an exciting and thrilling adventure. Messiah ReviewI am an avid reader of thrillers/suspense novels and have read numerous horror thrillers including books by Stephen King, John Saul and Thomas Harris. "Messiah" is one of the best thrillers I have ever read. When I purchased the book, I did not know what to expect as "Messiah" is the first effort by Boris Starling. I was not disappointed in the least. In fact, my only disappointment is attributable to the fact that the book had to end. Mr. Starling has apparently done significant research and has produced a compelling masterpiece of suspense with an imaginative and original storyline. I recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery thrillers. I am eagerly awaiting Mr. Starling's next effort!Messiah OverviewThe first victim was found hanging from a rope. The second, beaten to death in a pool of blood. The third, decapitated.Their backgrounds were as strikingly different as the methods of their murders. But one chilling detail linked all three crimes:their tongues had been cut out and replaced with a silver spoon. The local police had enough evidence to believe they were witnessing a rare--and disturbing--phenomenon:the making of a serial killer..."He'll kill again."Investigator Red Metcalfe has made national headlines with his uncanny gift for tracking killers.Getting inside their heads.Feeling what they feel. He's interviewed the most notorious serial killers in the world. He knows what makes them tick. But not this time. The killer's motives and methods are so elusive, so brilliant, that Red is forced to search the darkest corners of his own soul--and face the guiltiest secrets of his past--to see the truth. This time, the life he saves could be his own...Prepare yourself for the stunning debut of a major new talent...and the most frightening book you will read this year.Boris Starling's Messiah...A modern masterwork of serial killer suspense so realistic, so harrowing, it could only have been written by a former reporter and confidential investigator...* Great new voice--in the tradition of Thomas Harris and John Sandford* Great credentials--author is a former reporter and specialist in confidential investigations and kidnap negotiations* "Fast-paced, gritty...one of the best books on murder you'll read."--Esquire (UK)

Knowing God Intimately: Being as Close to Him as You Want to Be ReviewI've read several of Joyce's books, and I find them as a rule inspired, candid, and insightful. I'm reading a short one now on rejection that has some very powerful messages. All this to say that while this particular review is going to be a little rough I have enjoyed and been edified by everything else I've read by her. She is scriptural and positive without overdoing it, at least in her books, on what some call "Name it, claim it, frame it"- or Word of Faith.
This particular book seems mislabeled- it would probably be more aptly titled something relating to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. A very large part of the book encourages people to seek God for this gift as the way to intimacy and power with God. Since most of her readers are probably already charismatic/pentecostal they've already taken this foundational step and much of the book is not a direct benefit to them. For a new believer or someone not baptized in the Spirit I'd recommend it, otherwise there are plenty of other books out there, some by Joyce herself, that are probably going to be more beneficial to the reader trying to get from
point A to point B.Knowing God Intimately: Being as Close to Him as You Want to Be Overview

My Tongue Fell Out Review"When he called her over,
She stomped with a pout.
He said, `Did you stick your tongue out?'
She said, `No, my tongue fell out.'"
And so go many of the poetic passages in My Tongue Fell Out, the debut collection of poetry by S.L. Chessor. Dedicated to her late father, Billy Allen Jones, Chessor's collection is full of whimsical ruminations on family life, the good & the bad, the happy and the sad. All told, Chessor does a delightful job of laying bare her personal recollection of a life altogether sweet in humble retrospect.
Consider this passage from "'Yellow' Snow":
"He looked in all of the windows
And didn't see a soul.
So he climbed up on the hill,
Then he made `yellow' snow.
His dad looked out of the window
And he saw what his son did.
Then he said out loud,
`What do I do with this kid?'"
And this moving recollection from "Watching `Horror Shows' With Mom":
"I have many happy memories
But this is number one.
The best times of my life
Were watching `horror shows' with Mom."
Much like Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" before her, Chessor's fond recollection of such treasured memories makes you long for the long-gone innocence of your own youthful days.
Undeniably, Chessor also delves into the world of love and does an impressive job of conveying the sentimental feelings we all wish for everyday, highlighted most poignantly by this passage from "First Love, Last Love":
"New soul mates forever,
Never again be undone.
We will grow old together,
Two hearts beat as one.
You are my first love,
You are my last.
Souls bound forever,
We have conquered the past."
Almost makes you want to pick up the phone and get back in good with your ex...right?
Of course, true reminiscence wouldn't be complete without faint twinges of regret from time to time, and Chessor tugs at the heart strings just so in "Christmas With Jesus":
"News had come, I did not expect.
My aunt that I deeply loved,
On Christmas Eve was put to rest.
My son said, `Mom, you shouldn't cry,
She is in Heaven this year.'
`She's spending Christmas with Jesus
And she is so lucky to be there.'"
In My Tongue Fell Out, S.L. Chessor has done an excellent job of compiling the feelings and emotions that we all experience everyday and presenting them in such a way as to give us pause to reflect on just why our most treasured memories are so treasured. A highly recommended collection, Chessor's musings announce the arrival of a talent from whom much will be anticipated in the years to come.My Tongue Fell Out Overview" My Tongue Fell Out," was written about or inspired by family. My mother was very much the lady of the house. There never was a time that her hair was not in place, or her make up wasn't on. Sometimes I think she slept standing up, because, no one could look that good when they get out of bed in the morning. Dad, my hero, seemed to be serious all the time. He worked hard to provide for his family and said things like they were. I didn't know he had a sense of humor until I was thirty-five. I guess he was worried we wouldn't take him seriously when he told us to do something. My brother Bill, the middle child, is a story by itself, he made me mad most of the time when we were growing up. He was the class clown and to this day can make me laugh like no other person can. My baby brother managed to stay in trouble most of the time. I like to think that I am a good blend of all, but you will be the judge. "My Tongue Fell Out," was inspired by my niece. Children can say the cutest things when they are challenged. "Little Boy at the End of the Driveway, "and "Christmas with Jesus," are just a few of the poems inspired by my own children. My husband inspired "I Wanna Buy a BVD." We should all face facts, there are some family members you talk about and some that you don't, but I think my readers will identify with many of the poems that are in this book. They will touch your life in one way or another. S.L. Chessor lives in small town Indiana with her husband, nieces, and their dog Sassy.

By Slanderous Tongues (The Doubled Edge, Book 3) ReviewI really liked this series when it started out, since I was fans of Lackey's Serrated Edge series and I also like historical fiction with twists. The Guardian Sidhe plot line combined with the era of the Tudors seemed like an excellent idea. However, sorry to say, the believability of the novels seem to have gone downhill since This Sceptr'd Isle. In Isle and in Ill Met By Moonlight, Denoriel and Aleniel are presented as trusted friends, protectors, and advisors. Denoriel, especially, is shown to be a father-figure to both Harry and Elizabeth. Makes sense, since he is after all, centuries older, wiser, and is possessed of the Sidhe's love for children.
Which is why I was shocked when Lackey and Gellis decided to present him as Elizabeth's lover, of all things. To me, this just doesn't work. It's absurd to have a man, or elf if you prefer, go from raising a child to suddenly seeing that same child as a potential love interest. Yes, I know Denoriel is unbelievably hot and sexy, but STILL. And the reasoning given, that in order to protect Elizabeth from being attracted to Thomas Seymour, she needs another lover to distract her, and Denoriel is conveniently available and can't get her pregnant, plus she has stirrings of puppy-love for him . . .no this is just ridiculous. They would have done better to go with the original historical line that Elizabeth disliked Thomas Seymour since she saw him only as a stepfather, with Denoriel protecting her the way a father or brother would have. The teenage Elizabeth, from all the biographies, was not the type to have casual affairs with men at ANY age, she valued her autonomy too greatly and she knew that once a man gets a woman in bed, back then it was seen as a powerplay, which was why she always avoided such things. Also she hated marriage because of the dangers it presented to a woman, witness her mother and Henry VIII, because it gave total control to the man. Saying she would never marry because she could have her Sidhe lover and thus never miss out on sex or have to worry about commitment doesn't fit the image of Elizabeth that I know. And what about Robert Dudley, Elizabeth's great unrequited love? He barely gets a mention, Elizabeth is so preoccupied with Denno. Unless they're going to bring him up in the next book and say that the reason Elizabeth was able to resist him for so many years was because she loved Denoriel. Spare me! All in all the whole Elizabeth-Denno affair seemed tawdry and cheap to me instead of tender and loving. It would have made better sense for him to have fallen in love with Elizabeth once she was queen and Dudley had married her cousin Lettice, then she would have been looking at him as a woman who has known love and loss, not as a starry-eyed adolescent. I felt it also diminished the very real danger Seymour's advances caused her reputation, since there was no chance she might respond to them and jeopardize herself, the way there was in actual history. It would have been better if there HAD been a chance, then the book would have had some tension and Denoriel would have been tested as to how he could protect his charge without revealing himself and the whole scene of questioning at the end would have been a lot more dramatic. Yes, i know this is alternative history, but I think Lackey did a much better job with her other series, alternate Venice in Shadow of the Lion and This Rough Magic.By Slanderous Tongues (The Doubled Edge, Book 3) Overview

The Tongues of Angels: A Novel ReviewTold in retrospect, an older man's epiphany, this is a tale beyond coming-of-age, where a twenty-one-year-old camp art counselor first becomes aware of a healing path which has been opened for him. It takes a lifetime of experience and reflection to fully accept responsibility for his journey, to understand the need to be healed, and to realize how the path, now perhaps less arduous, will continue to challenge and nurture him long after the catalytic events, their time and place, have lost all presence but that seared in his heart.
The story is of the chaste friendship between the art counselor and a charismatic, gifted boy with a traumatic past and a foreboding future. As the reluctant tutor seeks to channel the glint of promise he senses in his unpredictable, willful ward, he is forced to confront his own talent, feelings, and perspective. Unknowingly and subtly, ward becomes tutor, not in overt, controlling ways, but as mirror, spiritual twin, unwitting angel. This interaction constitutes the body of the work, and anchors the subtextual meditations about art, mysticism, generosity, and understanding with which the keen, sensitive mind of the then counselor would thereafter struggle, so as to become true to himself and one with life. These are no mere conceptual musings, but disquieting thoughts that question accepted values, the stirring of moral and aesthetic passions which revolt at what is false, at what contradicts the inner self, and demand action. For an artist it translates as the self-justified need to express in one way and not any other. The battleground is mundane: heart and mind engaged in the daily course of living, at summer camp or elsewhere.
Mr. Price lays all out soberly, with language that is never labored, precious or pretentious. The scope of the work remains intimate, the insights acute and immediately relevant. The counselor's interior struggle becomes our own as the narrative focuses on probing the self as it reaches out for love. Indeed a path begins to emerge as we witness, through the tale, the dynamics of healing: living, thinking about our lives, taking in and letting go, allowing the synergy to propel.
Without Mr. Price's disciplined execution, this work could have been an inflated horror. Which is to say: the basic dramatic situation is recognizably stock. But Mr. Price's art, like truth, is great, and resides in the modifiers. As one reads, the novel keeps surprising by being "better" than somehow one anticipates; it builds to genuine exhilaration. The humor is serious, the tone that of a thoughtful man looking back so as to keep moving safely forward. There is tragedy, perhaps self-fulfilling, but of the sort that anoints. Paradoxically, it feels less than total: part of its finality is to keep on nurturing. "What might have been" is shown to be truly irrelevant. To the extent that there is such a thing as destiny, one is satisfied that each character has fulfilled his own. There has been no sacrifice. Fulfillment is a gift for all. "The Tongues of Angels" continues to haunt, serenely, long after it has been read.
This was the first Reynolds Price novel I ever read. It was a serendipitous find. It occupies a special place in my reading life. IĆ¢''ve read since several of his other novels and some of his poetry. All of them reward. Mr. Price is indeed a national treasure. The Tongues of Angels: A Novel Overview
