The Treatment of Disease in Tcm: Diseases of the Eyes, Ears, Nose and ReviewThe table of contents is listed by conditions/symptoms which is very efficient & fast reference tool. Each condition is then divided by specific causes whether it's from say, in example, the liver rather then the spleen. It's lists specific differences in symptoms to know which organs are affected (really easy for massage therapists to even almost a lay person) & true source of the malady. Such as is there a cough? Is it loud? Weak? Sound like a bark? Congested? Spontanous cough? Labored cough? Easy things a lay person could deferentiate.
It then tells you what acupuncture/acupressure points to do even getting in to specifics such as add a point if another symptom shows up to also what herbal formulas to use. Most acupressure books only list one or 2 points to use on EVERYONE for each condition which is not always accurate. Knowing the exact cause & which organs are affected is the most important.
Such as respiratory illness. You would look up the symptoms until you see a match which is important. Respiratory illness is usually considered "wind" which effects the liver & causes neck stiffness among other symptoms. It can be a "wind cold" or "wind heat", the color of sputum being an easy way to tell, cold is white, heat is yellow. If let's say you misdiagnose & think it's cold when it's really heat, you would do points to increase heat & therefore would make matters worse. (though acupressure is the least likely to cause any side effects from poor diagnosis, acupressure is also overall safe if make a mistake, though it results in not feeling better or slightly worse. Misdiagnosed herbal formulas can cause more side effects & you should see an herbalist.The Treatment of Disease in Tcm: Diseases of the Eyes, Ears, Nose and OverviewThis is the second in a seven-volume series titled TheTreatment of Disease in TCM by Philippe Sionneau and Lu Gang. Not only are many ofthese problems (such as itchy eyes, chalazion, otophyorrhea, andbleeding from the ears) not discussed in the current English languageliterature on TCM, but under each disease category, the authors givethe most complete pattern discrimination available in English. Thus,this series of books is a rich mine of clinical information andeffective treatments for a wide variety of diseases and theirpatterns.

The Essential Book of Traditional Chinese Medicine ReviewThis book is brief enough to be used as a handy reference, yet filled with just the right amount of accurate detail to give a complete, concise picture of a subject sometimes obscured by hype.
All the basic theoretical landmarks (yin-yang, five phases, meridians, six excesses, seven emotions, eight principles) are given attention, together with a glimpse of diagnostic and treatment techniques. All the information presented on disease-patterns, diagnostic techniques, etc., is summarized into clear tables. Informative footnotes are used to clarify and expand, as well as refer the reader to both classical and modern sources.
This book is less flashy than others which purport to present Chinese Medicine, yet I believe it is one of the better introductory texts, both because of its size, and because it maintains a balance between information for students and a language accessible to interested laypersons with no prior knowledge of Acupuncture or TCM. It makes no debased claims, and presents all the information from a scholarly perspective, based on current teaching and practice models used in the People's Republic of China. The style is sober, yet engaging and easy to read.
As a student of Chinese Medicine, I encourage everybody who is interested in this subject to add this book to their reading list. It is one of the books I'm always going back to when studying from other texts.The Essential Book of Traditional Chinese Medicine Overview

Acupuncture & Moxibustion Formulas & Treatments (Great Masters Series) ReviewThis is a great book for those looking to understand diseases and their treatments from the classical viewpoint of acupuncture as may be found in such books as zhen jiu jia yi jing, ling shu and zhen jiu da cheng. You won't find the herbalised acupuncture version here(i.e zang fu diagnosis and throw in all the needles at once and hope for the best).

This book reflects the clarity of Cheng Dan-An and his family lineage of acupuncturists. It represents a type of acupuncture that is as rare as hens teeth in todays time. One that accurately perceives the pulse as it is at that point in time and that aims to fluctuate that pulse back to a position of homeostasis. Although the book doesn't relay this important step, the preceeding understanding of the possible aetiology and proceeding application is given with clarity and simplicity. Brilliant.
Great references to the classics are presented to explain the various view points of pathogenesis and treatment for each category which are grouped according to classical categories (e.g diarrhea and dysentery, diseases of the hands and feet etc) and not the western disease names as is the case in recent times.
Acupuncture is classically a pulse based art, reading energy directly as it is NOW, and not as it was yesterday or has been as may be the case with symptoms. Reading the points prescribed by Cheng Dan-An with this in mind and with the practitioners understanding of how different points (by themselves, not in combination) alter the physiology and response in the pulse makes this book a rare diamond. Most acupuncture books are static preformulated responses to agreed upon pathologic conditions in formularised approach.
With the knowledge of the aforementioned pulse reading ability, and with the help of Cheng Dan-An, we may arrive at a powerful platform for the full utilization of acupuncture as powerful medical practice. One where the current state of energy wax and wane is perceived directly through palpation of the pulses and the correct treatment prescribed according to that pulse AND as it fluctuates throughout the treatment.
That said, it would be very helpful to have someone whom can transmit to you some clarity with regards to pulse diagnosis. Easier said than done. If a teacher cannot be found i suggest reading up on the works of George Sulie De Morant in his book Chinese Acupuncture. A phenomenal work by a man who totally immersed himself into the task of learning and translating voluminous material on the methods of the pulse based art of acupuncture. This achieved, much confusion can be dispelled on how to proceed with regards to treatment.
Regarding comparison to pattern based formula acupuncture using simultaneous use of many points (TCM) as compared to pulse based treatment using as few as one needle at a time (preferred and utilised effectively by Cheng Dan-An) , Confucius put it aptly when he said "There is as much error in seeing what is, as in seeing what there is not".

This book is a collection of his formulas and treatments for a wide range of traditional Chinese diseases, such as cold damage, warm heat diseases, wind stroke, mania, diarrhea and dysentery, cough, phlegm rheum, panting & wheezing, the five accumulations, and more. This is a seminal book in the development of modern acupuncture which should not be overlooked by any Western practitioner.

Manual of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Principles and Practice for Easy Reference ReviewI found this book in a state of confused abandonment at my local bookstore, lost among a mumbo-jumbo of unrelated material. I took it home and doubted my purchase until I had tried to obtain TCM information from about five other sources and felt completely confused. TCM can be very difficult to understand, let alone explain, without the guidance of such clear minds as Dr. Fan's. Many books on TCM fail to follow a clear line of explanation and get lost among the confusing similarity and seeming interchangeability of terms found in many sources, but Dr. Fan never does that. Clear, scholarly, a bit dry at times, he never leaves the reader in a void, but rather goes back on himself so as to ensure understanding. His presentation really does TCM a great service, as he dispenses completely with esoteric-sounding, tried and trite pseudo-explanations found elsewhere, and shows how TCM really is a scientific, integrated, logical science. Even obscure concepts such as "disrespect" among the five phases are explained clearly. Differential diagnosis is covered step by step, and Dr. Fan again shows he did extensive homework by summarizing and giving clear correlations between all stages of this most important TCM diagnostic technique. The explanations are brief, but they are a sure starting point and landmark for the student pursuing in-depth knowledge of TCM. For anyone who is looking to study TCM, and for students already lost in the half-english works of authors whose use of the language is their most appalling shortcoming, Dr. Fan's work is my recommendation. And for all practitioners of TCM, please give this book a read, you will find in it a renewed sense of the scientific coherence and depth of TCM at its best.Manual of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Principles and Practice for Easy Reference OverviewThis manual of diagnosis and therapy is brilliantly organized for study and reference. I found an acupuncturist who was also an anesthesiologist in my hunt for some means to return the use of the leg to me. I went in for the first treatment on a brace I had made, & crutches. I walked out carrying them all over my shoulder an hour-&-a-half later. My study began there & then.
This book is easy to follow & understand. I would like it to have a bit more information in two areas - diagnosis alternatives, and sources for some of the herbal formulas - even though a person can find these with a bit of searching in other references or online. Pocket Atlas of Tongue Diagnosis ReviewThis is a good book, and I have yet to find a better one, but I feel there is much room for improvement. Navigating the book was a little difficult, pictures were (in my opinion) not clearly described, and seemed to focus more on recommended treatment for the individual than the diagnosis of the tongue. I think I would prefer an artists color drawing instead of photos to more clearly describe atributes of the tongue. But I have yet to find a better book.Pocket Atlas of Tongue Diagnosis OverviewTogether with taking the pulse, observing the tongue forms an integral part of the "examination" which is needed to make a Chinese medical diagnosis.
This Color Atlas is concise and to the point. The first half explains individual tongue characteristics and the second half combines these characteristics in real case studies, thus deepening the reader's understanding of tongue diagnosis. The clearly written text is augmented by high-quality, full-color images.
With its compact and user-friendly form, this Color Atlas does not take up much space while at the same time containing a wealth of information which is interesting to both physicians (practitioners) of Chinese and western scientific medicine as well as for students of either.
162 color photographs show clearly the truth of a Chinese proverb which reads: Bai wén bù rú yi jiàn (it is better to see [something] once than to hear [it] a hundred times).

Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine ReviewThis is a very comprehensive book on tongue diagnosis in TCM for evaluating health. It not only goes into the usual information on tongue color, color & thickness of coating, size & shape of the tongue, features (such as fissures), etc., it gives information on the exceptions to the general rules.
The book also goes into some detail on why and how tongue characteristics develop. Tongue swollen, teeth marks visible along the edges? Suspect Spleen problems because the Spleen is not performing its function of transporting fluids in the body.
No photograph adequately can capture all the subtleties of tongue diagnosis. But the extensive collection of photos in this book do a good job of indicating what is meant by a pale tongue, a red tongue, a swollen tongue, a thick or thin coating, etc.
I recommend this book for serious TCM students and for people who want to learn how health problems can be revealed by the tongue.Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine OverviewExamination of the tongue, like the pulse, is one of the principal diagnostic methods in traditional Chinese medicine.
